The
guys at FOX just sent through the poster for this
years FOX Pro/Am event and it looks like they are
stepping it up again this year. The park at Wavehouse
is going to be revised specifically for this event
with a number of new obstacles introduced for the
comp. Plans are still being drawn up but from what
we have heard it sounds like it is going to be an
amazing setup! Prize money for the Pro class this
year is going to be R8000.00 and the Ams will be riding
for tons of prizes from FOX and DK bicycles. Make
sure you head on down to Wavehouse on December 14
and check this one out!
We
will be posting updates on the event leading up to
the day so check back here for more details.
The
DK stock has finally been unpacked and as you can
see we are hard at work pulling orders for all of
our stores. The first of the orders shipped today
and all the remaining ones should go out tomorrow.
We know a lot of you guys have been waiting for these
bikes and the good news is that you should see them
before the weekend!
Brad
and Tyrone from the Riot couldn't wait for the courier
to drop off their stock so they came past the warehouse
and started loading up their order! All of our other
stores should start receiving their stock from tomorrow.
United
team rider and south side shredder Paul Soderlund
sent through some sweet pics today. Jacques has just
built some ramps in his yard and it looks like Paul
has been putting them to good use. First up is a pic
of Paul repping his "gunburn" after a days
riding.
Here
he is with an opposite one footed table.
Paul
has some of the best turn downs ever!
Proper
table technique!
And
to end off we have this stretched tire grab.
This
past weekend the Bunt People - Music - Ride event
went down at Gateway and Ian Loudon was kind enough
to send us some pics from the day. DK team rider Matt
McLeod was there and here is a sampling of what went
down. We start off with Matt stretching a cranked
turn down.
Here
he is again with a big flair on the 8ft quarter.
Matt
again, this time with a big whip.
Finally
we end off with another kick ass pic. This time the
pic is of Cape Town rider Toby Gronewald shot by Wayne
Reiche at Gum trails. I think it would be very hard
for Wayne to take a bad pic at Gum, and this pic is
testament to that. Thanks Wayne!
The
new Animal goods have been unpacked and we are super
stoked to have the new Animal seats and stump posts
in stock. Animal have designed this seat from the
ground up, and instead of using the generic pivitol
seats available to most companies they have designed
their own. These seats come in either black, gray,
or white, and are covered in a durable kevlar fabric.
We have been getting endless calls for these seats
so we stoked to see them on their way to stores.
To
go with the seats we also have the new Animal stump
posts. These are the revised version and unlike previous
pivitol posts these ones are slam friendly. We have
these in silver and black.
Edwin
signature grips are also back in stock. By now most
of you will be familiar with these grips and their
super comfy feel. We have these in black at the moment
with colours on the way.
We
also have a whole lot of fresh T-shirts from the guys
at Animal. All the new designs are dialed to say the
least! All the shirts pictured here are available
in various sizes so call your local store today if
you fancy one of these.
Another
shipment of Animal goods will be arriving next week
and in that lot we have Jump Off stems as well as
some Skavenger goods as well. Check back for news
on that!
As
mentioned a few days ago the new Odyssey shipment
has arrived and here is the low down on some of the
new items. We have some fresh goods in this shipment
including the much anticipated Director forks, and
the new trailmix pedals.
First
up are the new Odyssey Trailmix pedals. these are
a slimmed down version of the JC pedal and are absolutely
amazing! They feature the same shape, materials, and
spindle as the regular JC's but are considerably lighter.
They also feature 17mm hex spindles so you can carry
one less spanner in your tool kit.
The
popular Sunday triumph bars are also back in stock
and this time we have them in some fresh colours.
Creamsicle and Latte are the new colours and these
are available in very limited numbers. 8" rise,
28" wide, and a 41 Thermal no nonsense lifetime
guarantee.
Odyssey
monolevers are also back in stock. By now these need
no introduction and are pretty much the benchmark
for levers these days. Available in small and medium
in black only.
To
go with the levers we also have Evo II brakes. These
are the most affordable CNC machined brake on the
market, and come with tons of extras so that you can
set up your brakes exactly how you like them. These
also feature Odysseys new slimmed down brake pads.
Another
new item in this lot are the limited edition "Lumberjack"
pad sets. These were designed to go with the Lunberjack
bars but will look good on anyone's bike. These have
a nice old school feel to them, and they arrived just
in time for nationals next weekend.
The
always popular Odyssey cassette hubs are also back
in stock. These are available in 36 RSD and LSD, as
well as 48 RSD and LSD. They come in black only and
you can choose from 3 or 1pc drivers as well.
Odyssey
Civilian svelte bars are back in stock and these are
one of our most popular bars. They feature a 7.75
rise and are super light thanks to being multi butted.
They also come with a 41 Thermal lifetime guarantee
so you know you are getting a set of bars that is
going to last.
And
last but not least we have the new Director forks.
These forks are probably the most talked about forks
on the market today and for good reason. the guys
at Odyssey have completely re looked the way that
forks are made, and as a result they have made the
lightest and strongest forks on the market. We posted
a full feature on them in the news earlier this month
so scroll down and see what went into these things.
It really is completely new technology, and has no
doubt got people thinking about how forks are made.
Due to the huge demand world wide these are available
in very limited numbers, and in white only. So if
you have been waiting for a set of these call your
local store today!
Thanks
to Tyrone for shooting the dialed product pics for
us! As you can see they were shot on the fire escape
of our new warehouse, but we will have more news for
you on that front next week.
Empire
team rider Brad Illingworth recently spent a week
down in Cape Town and managed to get in a session
at the infamous Gum Trails. The guys there have been
putting in a lot of work on the trails and it really
shows. Here Brad sessions the new hip with a sweet
table.
And
here is is again getting all stylish. Thanks to Wayne
for sending through the pics!
OG
Empire team rider Tyrone Bradley sent us a mail this
morning to say that he did some demos this weekend
at the SportEx show in JHB. Tyrone has been doing
demos on the ASA ramps for years now, and has this
setup pretty much wired. Tyrone was super stoked when
the setup at the event provided a perfect chance for
him to crank out some opposite ally-oop lookbacks,
and he didn't waste any time getting it done. Thanks
to Greg Illingworth for shooting this pic for us!
In
product news, the DK shipment landed today and should
start shipping to stores later in the week. The new
Odyssey shipment with Director forks, Trailmix pedals,
colouerd Sunday Triumph bars, and Odyssey pad sets
will be here tomorrow, and the Animal goods will be
here on Thursday. Looks like our stores will be packed
with fresh goods this weekend! check back for pics
and info on all these goods as we unpack.
The
new Fly Bikes shipment has hit our shores and amongst
this lot is the new Kevin Porter signature line. South
Africa is one of the first countries to receive this
line of products so head on down to your local bike
store and check them out!
The
Tierra line consists of Kevin's signature Frame, fork,
and bars, and the set comes in brown, blue, green,
and raw. These products are in stores now so head
on down to your favorite BMX store and check them
out!
Other
new Fly bikes items include the long awaited Fly Bikes
seats, as well as all the components in new anodized
red colours. Go get them!
United
team rider Paul Soderlund sent us these pics of him
riding Ronnie's trails. Here he is with a cranked
turn down through the main line.
He
also sent us this belter of him doing a late afternoon
table.
FInally
the new Animal products will be in next week. Our
entire order of the new seats is already sold out!
But don't worry because your local store should have
stock once they arrive, and we have more on the way.
Included in that lot we also have Edwin grips, Jump
off stems, Animal soft goods, and the Skavenger DVD.
Keep an eye on the news to see when that stuff arrives.
Colin
sent us a mail to say that he is back in California
and is busy doing a bunch of shooting and filming.
He is back at Lloyds place so you can be sure that
there will be lots of pics and news coming through.
Here is a pic that Lloyd sent through of the two of
them getting into the Cali vibe...
DK
team rider Matt Mcleod sent us through a few shots
that were taken over the weekend. It looks like the
guys in PE have constructed a few make shift ramps
at the bowl, and have put the basket ball hoops to
good use.
Here
is Matt with a fufanu on the sub.
And
here he is with a dope invert over the hip.
The
guys at Blunt mag are organising a "people -
music - ride" day at Wavehouse later this month.
The event is going down on the 21st of September and
looks like it will be a lot of fun. We are throwing
in some prizes for the event and all of the entry
fees are going towards a charitable cause. For more
info check out www.bluntmag.co.za
Finally
the new container of DK
completes is landing this week! Look for all of
our dealers to have their completes in stock by the
end of next week. Pre orders on these have been crazy,
so if you have been waiting for a particular model
then you are in luck.
The
guys at the Riot are having a video evening tonight
at their shop and will be hosting the JHB premiere
of "Across the Pond". If you in JHB tonight
make sure you stop around there and check it out.
There should be a good crowd, and they will be selling
DVD's at super good prices.
Odyssey
have just released a bunch of sweet new products and
they are on their way to us as we speak. On their
web site they have posted pics and info on most of
the new products so head on over there and check it
out. Two of the most anticipated items are the new
trail mix pedals and the director forks. Here is some
info on those products taken off the Odyssey site.
JIM
CIELENCKI TRAILMIX PEDAL
- Same shape, materials and spindles as the original
JC pedal.
- Slimmed-down bridge sections and longer gripping
pins.
- Knurl-free contact surface to prevent dirt from
getting clogged.
- 19.8* ounces (looseball aluminum - pair).
- All new 17mm wrench-flat spindle ends (with 6mm
allen key slots).
- Black, Gold, High-Polished, Limited.
- Looseball or Sealed.
- Replacement pins included.
- Aluminum now. Magnesium later.
- Organtic, not organic.
Made
at the request of riders like Taj, and some of JC's
other friends, the Trailmix is a lighter-weight version
of the original pedal (still in production) that leans
more toward trail riding with it's longer pins, slimmer
bridges, and knurl-free gripping surface. The pedals
also feature our new 17mm hex-end spindle wrench flats
that will accept the width of most adjustable wrenches
- helping to simplify assembly when traveling (6mm
allen key slot also included).
New Director Forks.
- New steerer tube and leg joint is stronger than
conventional designs.
- Butted and tapered “direct” legs prevent
rail and grind hang-ups.
- 10mm hollow integrated leg dropouts.
- 1 lb. 15.6 oz. (895.8g) with uncut 170mm steerer
tube and pre-load bolt.
- 3/8” axle slots only.
- Rustproof finishing prior to powdercoating.
- Black and white (limited soon).
Info
straight from the box is as follows:
"While the Director Fork may look different from
what you're used to, the geometry and feel is an identical
match with traditional forks. The axle is in the same
position as it would be with a "normal"
fork design.
The Director's differences are rooted in the use of
new construction techniques. The steerer tube is connected
to the legs by using a joint design that is a substantial
improvement over ordinary tubular crown forks. The
legs have been angled forward so the hollow dropouts
can blend smoothly into the leg tubing, while also
maintaining a "traditional" axle position.
By running the legs "directly" from where
the load is applied (at the steerer tube), to where
it is reacted against (at the axle), the mechanical
efficiency has been maximized in this structure. The
end result is improved performance and durability.
The dropouts are formed from the leg itself, rather
than being a basic welded on plate that is left to
"flap in the breeze" like on a conventional
fork. This design, combined with a 10mm thickness,
makes bent dropouts a thing of the past. The hollow
dropouts are not only dramatically stronger, they're
lighter too.
While weighing in at less than most "racing specific"
chromoly forks, the Director Fork is intended for
use with every style of riding."
Look
for these new products and others to be arriving in
the next few weeks.
This
past weekend Jonathan and Jimmy headed up to JHB for
the 7th Riot Jam and all I can say is these guys know
how to have a good time! Brad and Tyrone did an awesome
job putting together a super fun event and it was
awesome to see such a huge turn out from all the Joburg
locals. The Riot jams are all about the ams and this
year the guys from the Riot went on further and included
a beginner class. This was really good as it allowed
kids who have just started riding to join in on the
fun as well. We sponsored product prizes from Odyssey,
Fly Bikes, and DK bicycles for the winners, and The
Riot threw in some cash for the Am winners so none
of the finalists went home empty handed.
As
usual The Riot had their mobile store up at the event
and had everything from components to footwear and
clothing up for sale.
The
setup was a super fun set of trails that incorporated
a lot of unique obstacles. Some of these included
an old VW variant wagon that was linked into the concrete
mini / bowl, A bunch of hips and transfers, as well
as a 270' berm that everyone had to pump through to
get to the 2nd set of jumps.
Here
you can see one of the am's jumping into the berm.
This has to be one of the best dirt obstacles I have
seen in a long time and was the benchmark that separated
the beginner class from the ams. If a rider could
pump through the berm and reach the second section
you had to ride am. If you couldn't get through the
berm there was a special beginner section that was
a little less technical and allowed the kids to do
their stuff. All together 47 riders entered the event
and it was awesome to see so many up and comers shredding
the jumps.
After
the comp there was a pro demo with Empire and Riot
team riders doing their thing. Here you can see event
organiser Brad Illingworth stretching a nothing over
the first Jump.
Brad
Rowlett also came up for the event ams was killing
it through the section. He has some of the sweetest
360's out there and throwing down some big tricks
during the Blunt Full Throttle comp. Here he is with
a 360 whip.
After
it was all done a huge bonfire was lit and everyone
hung out and partied the night away. Huge props must
go out to the guys at The Riot for another awesome
event! If you didn't get to attend the jam but still
want to see some of the riding / mayhem / action then
click on the video below... We hope to see you at
the next one! For a detailed report on the jam and
all of the placing's check out www.theriot.co.za
Finally,
on the Sunday after the Jam some of the Riot and Empire
crew were invited to compete a 3 hour endurance race
similar to the famous Lemans style race they have
each year. The difference with this race is that it
was in go carts not cars! The team of 5 drivers included
Tyrone Bradley, Jonathan Sherwood, Tim Dell, Brad
Illingworth, and Greg Illingworth. None of the guys
had ever done anything like this and they were up
against 7 other teams of fanatical racing enthusiasts.
Because
it was an endurance race each team had to complete
9 driver changes through the 3 hour race. These were
pretty crazy as the cars wanted to keep going and
one of the team had to hold the cart back while the
drivers changed. Here Tyrone Jumps in after Tim's
run on the track.
Everyone
had a blast racing the carts and at the end of the
day they walked away with 3rd place overall and were
one of only 3 teams to do laps in the 39 second bracket!
Not bad for a bunch of guys who ride BMX bikes. Here
you can see Tyrone in the number 9 cart chasing down
the leaders.
That's
it for today. Check back for more news in the coming
days.
