Random News:

Fly Bikes have a new web site up and it looks really good. They have tons of info up there about all of their products and also plenty of pictures for you to check out. The site also loads really fast and is simple to navigate which is always a good thing. Check it out! www.flybikesbmx.com

T-1 are also working on a new frame with Danny Hickerson and Joel Moody. The frame will feature a 75" head tube angle as well as a higher BB. So far the frame weighs in at 5lbs and with a few more tweaks on future prototypes it might drop even further. For more info check out www.terribleone.com

In other product news we have a bunch of new products on the way. Firstly we have the new Fly Shipment on the way. In this lot we have the long awaited "Fly Cranks" and these should be in stores by mid April. The cranks come in 175mm and 180mm and are available in black, dirty green, and dirty white. We are already almost sold out on pre book so if you are looking for these cranks give your local bike store a call. Also in this lot is Buddy Chellans signature colour way Fly Frame. Buddy's frame will be the new Mosca frame and it features a number of changes. Buddy's frame will feature a 20.6 Top tube to suit his needs, and will be available in a "Mellow Orange" colour. Buddy is the first rider in SA to get a signature frame sold world wide so we are really excited for Buddy. these frames should be on sale mid April.

We also have a bunch of Odyssey goods on the way and there are a number of new items in this lot. Firstly we will have Civilian Svelte bars and Pro Dirt forks in the new "Digital Camo" colour. These things look amazing! and will be in stores around early April. The digital camo products are only available in VERY LIMITED NUMBERS so if you are keen on these then it would be a good idea to get your local store to pre book yours for you. Once they are sold out they are gone for good! Another new item coming in with the odyssey goods are the G-sport Marmoset hubs. These hubs are legendary for their light weight and superior strength, so if you are looking for a light and strong front hub then you may want to look into getting one of these.

Good Stuff:

I have no idea why I haven't posted this sooner but I guess its better late then never. If you haven't already visited www.defgrip.com then head on over there right away! The site is a collaboration between a number of BMX riders including Nuno from Odyssey, Rich Hirsch from Lotek, Harrison Boyce from Macneil, and others. I have been visiting Harrison's site www.elamenop.com for many years now and Defgrip is his latest web project. The site has been up for a while and has tons of interesting stuff to check out. Art, Design, photography, fashion, and a whole bunch of other BMX related topics. This site is definitely one of my favorite BMX sites, and I have a feeling big things are going to come from this collaboration. Check it out!

What a week!:

It has been a crazy week for us here so this update is going to be a big one. First off we headed down to Cape Town for the Cycle Tour Expo and the show was a huge success. It was great to see so many people coming through to hang out at the booth, and it was also great to meet a lot of store owners that we have been dealing with over the last few years. We also met up with a lot of new stores which is always good, so a lot of you will be seeing our products in new stores in the coming months. Thanks to everyone who came through and visited it was awesome to see all of you!

The booth went down really well with everyone, so here are a few pics for you to check out. These pics were taken the day before the show opened and the lights in the hall were not on yet. All we had to light up our stand during the build up were a few spot lights so please excuse the dim lighting in the shots.

One of the highlights of the show was the launch of the new DK range of bikes. We had all nine models on display and they were getting a lot of attention. These bikes are amazing value for money, and its going to be hard to beat these bikes when you are looking for a complete.

We printed some big drop banners for the booth featuring team riders Tyrone Bradley, Jimmy Reynolds, Buddy Chellan, and Colin Loudon. These turned out really good and people kept asking us if they could have them after the show. We like them a little too much though and have decided to keep the banners for the warehouse.

Here you can see the booth from the other side. You cant see it from this angle but in the far corner of the booth we had a Odyssey front end built up for people to have a look at. It was an Odyssey Race Fork, with and Elementary stem, and a Pair of Civilian Svelte bars, all built up for people to see how light that front end was. Seeing peoples reactions to the stem was amazing, and reps and industry types kept popping into the booth to check it out.

All and all the show went down really well, and we look forward to seeing all of you there next year.

After setting up the booth we went and rode Spider Ramps in Tokai. This park is pretty tight and its a lot of fun. You can pretty much pump all over the place without pedaling and there are tons of lines. This is a pic of Toby Gronewald blasting a table on one of the big quarter's.

The guys from the park had just finished putting a fresh layer of masonite on the mini when we arrived, and Jimmy was loving the mini and hip combo. Nigel Morta shot this pic of Jimmy whipping the hip.

Rupert was killing the place and was carving super high on the vert walls inside. Rupert also had tons of lines all over the park and it was clear that he has the place dialed. A big thanks must go out to Rupert for organising the session for us.

Another one of the reasons we headed down to Cape Town was for the new Animal video Premiere. Thanks to everyone who came through for this and made it such an awesome day. We started off with a few fun events including a long jump comp and a bunny hop comp. The long jump comp was insane with guys flying through the air all over the place. Everything was going good until one of the kids competing (Grant Ketchington) went OTB. From the second he hit the ground he was lights out and he had to be taken off to the hospital to get checked out. Buddy Chellan ended up taking the win in the long jump but he gave his prize to Grant.

Next up was the Bunny Hop contest and this was a Battle between Brendan and Johan. These guys were going higher then anyone and it was super close. This is a shot of Brendan clearing 103.5cm.

This is Johan with his winning hop of 104cm. The pic looks like he is going to clip it but managed to get it over without knocking the bar. Brendan and Johan have completely different bunny hop styles as well so watching these guys compete was awesome.

After the fun events a session went down at the bowl. The riding was awesome with everyone sessioning the wall rider and the sub box. Buddy Chellan and Brendan were training 720's out of the bowl, Malcolm was doing 3 whips, Wayne fufanued the wall ride, and VS managed to flip out of the bowl! We filmed a bunch of the riding so look for it to appear in the upcoming Empire video.

After that it was time for the Animal video. A big thanks must go out to Rupert and the guys from Red Bull for allowing us to use their mobile rig. This truck is insane and is basically a moving theatre.

Here is a pic of the bowl set up and some of the spectators.

After the video premiere we packed up and started the journey back to Durban. Thanks again to everyone who came and made the day a huge success, Especially Rupert from Red Bull, Buddy Chellan, Wayne Reiche, James from City Cycles, and Toby Gronewald. We would also like to wish Grant a speedy recovery, and we hope to see you back on your bike soon.

That's about it for today. Keep checking back for more news in the coming days.

Empire, Product, & Team News:

Its Friday afternoon and we are running around getting everything ready for the show next week. We are heading down to Cape Town tomorrow with a stop in PE on the way. Roscoe Siebers has a new mini ramp in his back yard so we are going to stop by and hang out / ride before continuing on down to CT. If you are in the Cape Town area next week make sure you stop by the Cycle Tour Expo and check out the booth! We have a lot of new and limited products op on display so make sure you stop by.

Here is a more detailed look at some of the new Suelo frames we just got in.

The frames come in a 18.8TT size and are available in a mint green and brown. This is the first time we have stocked flat frames and we are really pleased with the response we have had to these frames. If you are a flatlander looking for a new frame then you might want to check these out.

All Suelo frames feature integrated head tubes and Guiri tabs.

The frames also have low profile 10mm dropouts. Nankai freecoaster hubs come standard with 10mm axles and as most flatlanders prefer to run Nankai hubs, Suelo have chosen to go with 10mm dropouts as opposed to the more common 14mm slots.

All the frames also feature SBB's.

Here you can get a better look at the two colours, Mint Green, and Brown.

We also have some random team news for you guys... FBM rider Brad Illingworth is busy getting ready for the "Mentals Inc" show that is happening this Saturday. He has even booked a limo for the trip to the club so you know he is serious about this show!

Federal rider Tyrone Bradley and Odyssey rider Colin Loudon are also driving up to JHB for the show. Im no expert on punk shows, but if two of our team are driving 5 hours to see this one, and another team rider is renting a limo, I think its safe to say that this show is going to be huge...

Fly bikes rider Buddy Chellan recently took a bit of a slam and ended up with some stitches in his arm. Buddy says its all good though and he is still on his bike.

Fellow Fly bikes rider Pual Soderlund crashed on a 360 at his trails and broke his arm. Paul said he will be off his bike for 6 weeks but is hoping to be able to ride at the "Rand Show" comp in April. Get well soon Paul!

Animal rider Gareth Lyle is up to his usual antics and should be receiving his new Federal Hamilton frame any day now. Gareth has been riding his current frame for years! so a new frame is long over due. Look for a bike check soon.

Empire rider Jimmy Reynolds is heading down to Cape Town with us for the Cycle Tour Expo and the Animal "All Day" premiere. The Premiere is set to be a lot of fun so make sure you get there. Rondebosch bowl, March 12, and the days events should kick off around 3:00 PM. Make sure you get there because this video is a BELTER!

That's all the news from us. Check back next week for updates from Cape Town and pics from the show.
